Paprika Southern readers-turned-listeners may already be familiar with Cristina Drumm and Hygge, her Savannah based shop. A few weeks ago, Drumm sat down with her morning coffee, zooming in to share cozy thoughts about her life and business with the PS team.

The store is both named and modeled after the Danish word hygge (pronounced huga), by Drumm’s definition, is used to acknowledge a feeling or mood of coziness. Readily accessible ways to find hygge include candle light, blankets, fuzzy socks, and winter weather. Although Hygge now describes a brick and mortar retail location for Drumm, the word envelopes far more than the objects sold there.

Since the store’s beginning, Drumm has focused on what is both good for us and the environment. At Hygge, that means carefully selected items, most of which are made by hand or in small batches, with an emphasis on quality, and timeliness over trends. Drumm also credits her mother to this approach, who raised her in efforts not to harm the earth around them. This regard for sustainability, Drumm said, is also inherently Danish. Today, practicing hygge balances the ups and downs of Drumm’s career. Even in periods of stress, Drumm maintains her equilibrium by staying in touch with nature, stretching, and peaceful mornings.

For a store grounded in events to foster community connection, COVID times called for a vision shift. While a traditional sense of hygge infused togetherness is temporarily out of reach, Drumm has honed in on methods to ease her customer’s quarantines. From puzzles to individually curated care packages, Hygge provides an uplift through socially distant or online shopping. Fortunate for Hygge’s access to an adjacent courtyard, Drumm is enthusiastic about planning safe outdoor gatherings. As Drumm and her business remain steady throughout a tumultuous year, it seems the art of hygge just might be pandemic proof.
